ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey associate head coach Harry Rosenholtz has been selected to serve as a goaltending coach at the 2010 USA Hockey Girls Select 16 &17 Player Development Camp. The camp is scheduled to run from June 25 through July 1 at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. This is the third straight year that Rosenholtz has attended the camp.

Players attending the camp have been chosen through regional tryouts, and those selected will comprise the USA U-18 roster that will compete in Canada in August. The team will also play in the World U-18 Championships this year.

Rosenholtz just completed his second year with the Bobcats after joining head coach Rick Seeley’s staff after a long career at Yale. Rosenholtz has played a pivotal role in one of the largest season-to-season turnarounds in college hockey history when Quinnipiac improved from 3-26-5 in 2008-09 to 19-10-8 last season. One of the biggest reasons for the Bobcats’ success was the play of freshman goalie Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario). Under Rosenholtz’s guidance, Vigilanti had a success first season, leading the nation in goals-against average (1.24) while her .957 save percentage was the second highest all-time in the history of ECAC Hockey. As a result, Vigilanti was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie and Goalie of the Year, while also earning First Team honors. Vigilanti also received All-New England honors.

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tom Moore has announced the signings of Lance Brown (Teaneck, N.J.) and William Harrison (Bronx, N.Y.) to National Letters of Intent. Brown will have to sit out the 2010-11 season as a transfer from Fordham University while having three years of eligibility remaining. Harrison will be immediately eligible for the next two years after spending two seasons at Western Texas College. Brown and Harrison join Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) and Dominique Langston (Bridgeport, Conn.), who committed to the Bobcats in the early signing period, to comprise this year’s recruiting class.

"We are thrilled to have Will Harrison and Lance Brown joining our Quinnipiac basketball family,” said Moore.

Brown, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 6.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while starting 18 of 25 games played as a freshman at Fordham. While selective with his three-point shot, Brown connected on 10-of-24 attempts (.417), percentage points better than his overall field-goal percentage (.411). He fits Quinnipiac’s style of crashing the offensive boards, as 44 of his 99 rebounds came on the offensive glass. Brown capped a strong freshman season with career highs of 18 points and nine rebounds at Duquesne, March 5.

A graduate of New Jersey powerhouse Paterson Catholic, Brown led the Cougars to a 26-5 record, including a perfect 9-0 in the conference. In his time playing under coach Damon Wright at Paterson Catholic, Brown led the Cougars to the championship game of the North Jersey, Non-Public B tournament and the Passaic County Championship. He was named MVP of the 2007 Eddie Griffin Challenge, featuring the top 10 seniors from both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, after scoring 23 points and adding eight rebounds. Brown also helped the New Jersey Playaz to the IS8 Fall Classic Championship in 2008. Both Rivals.com and Scout.com listed Brown as a three-star recruit out of high school, with Scout.com ranking him 39th in the nation among shooting guard recruits.

"Lance comes to us with an invaluable year's worth of playing experience in the Atlantic 10,” said Moore. “He is a versatile defender and excellent rebounder from the perimeter. He also comes from elite high school and AAU programs and should be a valuable addition to our program."

Ranked the 54th-best shooting guard recruit in the nation out of high school by ESPN.com, Harrison averaged a team-best 13.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from the floor for Western Texas College last season. Harrison played scholastically at Wadleigh High School in the Bronx, serving as team captain and averaging 21.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as a senior under coach Mike Crump.

Harrison led Wadleigh to the Public Schools Athletic League quarterfinals in his final season, where he scored 35 points in his final high school game. He was named to the New York Daily News All-City Team as a senior. He also starred for coach Gary Charles and the New York Panthers AAU squad.

"Will is a very athletic wing who should help us right away,” said Moore. “He comes from excellent high school and junior college programs, as well as one of the top AAU programs in the country. He should be very good defensively, on the glass, and in transition for us."

Bristol Teen Dies after Fall at State Park

June 24, 2010 - A Bristol teen died Wednesday evening after a fall during the afternoon at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden.

Matthew Roche, 19, a 2009 graduate of Bristol Eastern High School and a player on the Bristol Legion baseball team, was found at about 1:30 p.m. after suffering injuries from a fall of about 40 feet from the Blue Trail at the park, according to reports.

[Bristol Eastern H.S. administrators were working thursday to set up counseling sessions for students affected by Roche's passing.]

After the accident, Roch was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he passed away at 6:19 p.m.

According to a state police report, Hamden fire/police dispatch received a 911 call from two hikers in the park, who reported that while hiking they had discovered a young male at the base of the stone tower who was suffering from a serious head wound.

Roche was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

State police major crime detectives responded to the park to conduct an investigation into the death.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim fell from the top of the stone tower located in the park, and there appears to be no criminal aspect in the case.

There was nothing suspicious found and no foul play is suspected. Investigation is continuing by the state police’s central district major crime squad.

A post mortem examination will be conducted today to determine the manner and cause of death.

Roche was a key player for this year’s Post 2 American Legion baseball team.

After playing one game last night after learning he was in surgery for serious injuries, the team canceled the second game of its scheduled doubleheader after learning that he had died.

The team also postponed its scheduled game tonight.

“I’m still in a state of shock. It’s devastating,” said Bristol Legion head coach Dave Nocera, who spoke with Roche’s father last night.

Nocera lost two boys of his own due to separate incidents three years ago.

“I can appreciate what his dad is going through,” he said.

“He was a kid that I really cared about,” Nocera added. “He was a very sensitive and caring young man who really wanted to do well for the team.”

While describing Roche as a young man who “had challenges to overcome in his life,” Nocera said he had an outstanding year this past season playing baseball as a freshman for Roger Williams University.

He started 33 games at first base, hitting .309 for the season and leading the team in RBI with 23.

But for the immediate future, Nocera said, the focus for Roche’s friends and teammates will not be on baseball.

“I miss him terribly already,” he said. “I feel for his family, and certainly I feel for his teammates.”

At their age, Roche’s friends and teammates are not used to dealing with such a loss, Nocera noted, and the Legion coaches will be helping them deal with their grief.

“For these guys, they’ve lost a brother,” he said. “Clearly after the game, when I told them the news, they were absolutely overwhelmed.”

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Former Southern Connecticut State University All-American John Wallin has been named head men’s cross country/track and field coach at his alma mater. The announcement was made today by Director of Athletics Patricia D. Nicol. Wallin has distinguished himself as one of the top coaches in the nation over the past decade, a span that included stints at Dartmouth, Adams State College (Colo.) and SCSU. Wallin spent this past year as an assistant coach for the Owls and was named United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men’s Regional Assistant Coach of the Year during the outdoor campaign.

Wallin replaces Shawn Green, who stepped down at the conclusion of the 2009-10 academic year.

“John Wallin has established a pedigree as an outstanding coach who develops student-athletes that excel academically and athletically,” Nicol said. “In addition, he is well-versed in the storied tradition of our men’s cross country and track and field programs through his experiences as a student-athlete and coach here at SCSU. I am fully confident that John will continue that level of excellence as he assumes his head coaching duties.”

Wallin made an immediate impact in his first year with the Owls after a seven-year run as associate head men’s and women’s track and field coach at Adams State. During the 2009-10 academic year at SCSU, Wallin coached seven All-Americans, nine NCAA qualifiers, 24 All-New England selections, two New England champions and 19 Northeast-10 Conference champions. The Owls also won the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference men’s indoor and outdoor track and field championships and the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships for the first time in program history. SCSU was also ranked as high as No. 11 nationally during the indoor season.

During his tenure at Adams State, Wallin coached seven individual national champions, one relay national champion and 104 All-Americans (45 men, 59 women). His student-athletes claimed 25 school records, eight indoor Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meet records and 17 outdoor RMAC meet records.

Prior to joining the Adams State staff, Wallin served as assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach at Dartmouth College (1999-2001). During his time with the Big Green, he guided student-athletes to five school records, nine Ivy League titles, one Division I NCAA All-America honor and three New England decathlon champions.

Wallin also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Big Green and enjoyed a brief stint as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Dartmouth.

As a student-athlete, Wallin served as a two-year team captain for Southern Connecticut. He earned All-America honors in the decathlon as a junior and senior, while also qualifying for the NCAA Championships as a sophomore.

Wallin also took home conference champion honors in the 55 meter high hurdles as a senior, a campaign in which the Owls won their first indoor conference championship.

Wallin holds a bachelor’s degree in human performance from Southern Connecticut State University and has completed graduate work towards a master’s degree in human performance from Adams State.
