Three Major Publications Name Quinnipiac Men’s Basketball Preseason NEC Favorite

Posted by SNCTTV On September - 26 - 2010Comments Off

HAMDEN, Conn. – Three major publications have named the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team as the preseason favorite to win the Northeast Conference Championship. Athlon Sports, Lindy’s and The Sporting News each picked the Bobcats to win the league title.

“It’s an honor to be chosen as the favorite in the Northeast Conference this year by such prestigious national media outlets,” said Quinnipiac Head Coach Tom Moore. “The ranking is based on the accomplishments of last year’s team and the potential of some of our newcomers. Obviously, a lot of hard work will have to be done if we are to fulfill these predictions, and I expect the Northeast Conference race to be a highly-competitive one.”

In each publication, reigning NEC Player of the Year Justin Rutty (Newburgh, N.Y.) was named as the favorite to win the award again in 2010-11. The Sporting News also named Moore to repeat as NEC Coach of the Year.

Junior James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) was also named to the All-NEC First and Second Teams, by The Sporting News and Lindy’s, respectively. Johnson was named the best playmaker in the league by Lindy’s, while Rutty took the best rebounder honors from the same publication.

The Sporting News likes the Bobcats to take a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament, while Athlon picked Quinnipiac to defeat Stony Brook in the new “First Four” format. Under Athlon’s blueprint, the Bobcats would face top-seeded Purdue in the first round.

The Bobcats open the 2010-11 season Nov. 13, when they face local rival Yale at the Second Annual Connecticut 6 Classic. Quinnipiac faces the Bulldogs in the 8 p.m. nightcap of the event, to be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

New Haven, Conn. – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced its Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending September 25.

About the Award: This is the seventh year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CHAD SPANN, NORTHERN ILLINOIS

Senior, Tailback, Indianapolis, IN/North Central

Northern Illinois senior tailback Chad Spann rushed for a career-high 223 yards (on just 15 carries) and two touchdowns as the Huskies defeated Minnesota, 34-23. Spann’s 61-yard scoring run with six minutes left in the contest sealed the victory. Spann averaged 14.9 yards a rush and added a three-yard touchdown run.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NATE IRVING, NORTH CAROLINA STATE

Redshirt Senior, Linebacker, Wallace, NC/Wallace-Rose Hill

Linebacker Nate Irving totaled a career-best 16 tackles (9 solo), including 4.5 for losses, as North Carolina State defeated ACC-rival Georgia Tech, 45-28. Irving added two quarterback sacks for the Wolfpack, who improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2002.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.

Plans are already underway for the 44th annual Walter Camp Weekend, scheduled for January 13-15, 2011 in New Haven. The Walter Camp 2010 College Player of the Year recipient and its 121st All-America Team will be announced live on ESPN in early December.

Yale Downs Cornell in IVY League Opener

Posted by SNCTTV On September - 25 - 2010Comments Off

ITAHCA, N.Y. – Alex Thomas is showing why he is the most prolific runner in Connecticut High School history. The junior RB from Ansonia, who scored three times in an opening day win last week, rambled for 124 yards on 18 carries (6.9 avg.) to help the Yale football team beat Cornell 21-7 in the Ivy opener for both schools before a homecoming crowd of 16,026 at Schoellkopf Field.

The Elis (2-0, 1-0 Ivy), who outgained the home team in total offense 443 to 270, broke open a 7-7 game in the third with a pair of TDs to end a two-game skid against the Big Red (0-2, 0-1).

“We went into the half with 282 yards of offense and just seven points. We thought we were pressing a little too much,” said Tom Williams, the Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Yale Football. “We made the plays we were suppose to make in the second half. We took the ball away and made them pay. That’s the hallmark of a good team.”

Yale drove the ball 93 yards on its second possession to take a 7-0 lead. Patrick Witt (18-32, 232, 1 TD) hit WR Gio Christodoulou over the middle and the speedy senior broke two tackles and outraced a defensive back to the corner pilon for a 69-yard scoring play at 6:01. “I had been in for a few plays and was a little winded. Pat put the ball in the right place and I was lucky to win the race. That took a lot out of me,” said Christodoulou.

A pair of interceptions by Big Red DB Emani Fenton prevented the visitors from adding any points in the first half. Cornell QB Jeff Matthews found TB Nick Booker-Tandy open in the right flat late in the first quarter on an 11-yard pass play to even the score.

The Bulldogs capitalized on Adam Money’s fifth career interception on the opening drive of the second half to take the lead again. Thomas, who had a one-yard run, scored his fourth TD of the season to give Yale a 14-7 lead.

“We wanted the change the momentum in the second half,” said Money, who returned the pick 20 yards and also forced a big special teams fumble. “This was a cohesive, group effort and the defensive line really made our jobs easier today.”

Yale increased the lead to 14 points by converting another turnover. LB Jordan Haynes recovered a fumbled punt on the Cornell 30 late in the third that led to Witt’s one-yard plunge at 1:28.

Senior WR Jordan Forney led the Blue with five catches for 54 yards, but this was more of a defensive day (4 sacks, 2 turnovers) for the visitors. Haynes led Yale with 10 (5-5) total stops while DB Geoff Dunham had six solo tackles and DE Allen Davis notched his first two collegiate sacks.

Davis and his teammates knocked out Cornell’s starting TB on his first carry of the game and made life difficult for Mathews (23-35, 248, 1 TD), a freshman making his first start.

This Week in College Football History: Sept. 27 – Oct. 3

As part of an ongoing series throughout the fall, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame posts This Week in College Football History, which takes a look back at some of college football's landmark moments over the last 141 years.

If you choose to use this content in whole or in part, as a courtesy, please credit The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame.

FEATURED MOMENT:

September 30, 1939- Fordham beat Waynesburg (Pa.) 34-7 in the first televised football game in history. Bill Stern called the play-by-play for W2XBS (now WNBC-TV) while a young announcer from Alabama named Mel Allen did pre-game interviews. Few television sets could receive the signal, but some fans saw the telecast at the nearby New York World's Fair.

OTHER NOTABLE DATES:

September 27, 1969- In a celebration of college football's 100th anniversary, Rutgers defeated Princeton, 29-0 in Piscataway. Rutgers quarterback Rich Policastro led the way by completing 14 of 19 passes for 164 yards and a score, and added another touchdown on the ground, to give the Scarlet Knights a 21-0 halftime lead.

September 28, 1985- In Knoxville, Tennessee upset No. 1 Auburn, 38-20. Tennessee quarterback Tony Robinson connected on 17 of 30 passes for 259 yards and four scores to lead the Volunteers to a 24-0 halftime lead over College Football Hall of Fame head coach Pat Dye's Tigers. College Football Hall of Famer Bo Jackson compiled 80 yards on 17 carries, but left the game in the third quarter with a knee injury.

September 29, 2001- New Mexico State shutout ULM, 31-0 in Monroe, La. The shutout was New Mexico State's first in 283 games, dating back to Sept. 21, 1974, the NCAA record for most consecutive games without posting a shutout.

October 1, 1955- No. 6 Army crushed No. 18 Penn State, 35-6 in West Point. After earning All-American honors as an end in the previous season, College Football Hall of Famer Don Holleder moved to quarterback for the 1955 campaign. Holleder completed only one pass on the day, but it was an eight-yard scoring strike to end Don Satterfield in the first quarter. College Football Hall of Fame head coach Earl Blaik's Black Knights utilized big plays on defense and special teams to cruise to a 21-0 halftime lead. The Nittany Lions were led by College Football Hall of Fame head coach Charles "Rip" Engle, as well as assistant coach and College Football Hall of Famer Joe Paterno.

October 2, 1943- In a 40-21 win over Illinois in West Lafayette, Purdue set an NCAA record for most turnovers by a winning team. The Boilermakers lost nine fumbles and threw two interceptions on the day. The win helped propel Purdue to a 9-0 record and a Big Ten championship.

October 3, 1992- For the second consecutive season, College Football Hall of Fame coach Bobby Bowden and No. 3 Florida State lost to No. 2 Miami on a field goal that drifted wide right, falling in Miami 19-16. College Football Hall of Fame quarterback Gino Torretta hit receiver Lamar Thomas to put the Hurricanes ahead, 17-16 with 6:50 to play. After a safety on special teams pushed the deficit to three, the Seminoles drove deep into Miami territory until Dan Mowery missed a 39-yard field goal on the game's final play.
