November 15, 2010 - The West Haven Pop Warner Division 2 Midgets are the 2010 Connecticut Pop Warner champions. Last night they upended Wolcott to earn a spot in the upcoming New England Regional verses the Rhode Island state champion. NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The running back tandem of senior John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) and junior Rashaad Slowley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) combined for 348 yards and five touchdowns as the Southern Connecticut State University football team earned a share of its third Northeast-10 Conference title in the last five years with a 52-21 win over Saint Anselm on Saturday at Jess Dow Field. Slowley finished with 187 yards and matched a career-high with three touchdowns, while Wiechman added 161 yards and two scores.
SCSU finishes its 2010 season with a 6-4 mark, 6-2 in the NE-10. St. Anselm closes at 2-8, 2-6.
The Owls opened the scoring with a special teams touchdown. After forcing Saint Anselm into a punt, freshman J.W. Forte (Everett, Mass.) captured the line drive kick and scampered 49 yards for a score. Eric LaVorgna (North Haven, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
Southern Connecticut put together an 11-play, 50-yard drive on its next possession. The drive was capped with a three-yard pass from quarterback Kevin Lynch (Medfield, Mass.) to tight end Nick Mandich (Miami, Fla.).
The Owls extended their lead to 21-0 when Slowley broke free for a 76-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the day.
Slowley registered his second touchdown of the day just 57 seconds into the second quarter on a 34-yard run to extend the lead to 28-0.
St. Anselm scored a touchdown before the half to trim the deficit to 28-7 at halftime.
Wiechman scored his first touchdown of the day midway through the third quarter, when he was on the end of a 23-yard pass from Lynch to make it 35-7. Slowley then broke free from 25 yards later in the quarter for his third score of the afternoon.
The Hawks closed to within 42-14 through three quarters, but LaVorgna’s 26-yard field goal just over four minutes into the final frame extended the Owls lead to 31 points.
After a St. Anselm score, Wiechman then capped the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown run to make it a 52-21.
Lynch finished 16-of-22 for 273 yards and two touchdowns. Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) led the receivers with seven catches for 140 yards. Brian Tourtelott (Latham, N.Y.) added four catches for 64 yards.
Derrell Moye (Newark, N.J.) had seven tackles to lead the defense.
