Owls Remain Alive In College World Series, Down No. 1 Grand Valley State, 8-6
CARY, N.C. – Junior shortstop Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.) had three hits, drove in three runs and scored a run to lead a 14-hit attack as the No. 8 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team notched an 8-6 win over against No. 1 nationally ranked Grand Valley State on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls improved to 44-8-1 on the year with the win and will play either Sonoma State or West Florida in another elimination game on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
The loss ends the season for Grand Valley State with a 52-5 record. The victory was the first in four tries in College World Series action all-time for the Owls, who were edged by GVSU in 2005, 3-2.
Both teams had runners on base in the first inning but couldn’t take the lead. The Owls then put together a scoring threat in the top of the second but were unable to score. Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.), T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) and Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) strung together three straight singles to load the bases with one out. However, the Owls were unable to score.
Grand Valley also threatened in the bottom half, putting runners at second and third with one out courtesy of a pair of walks. However, Owls’ hurler Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) struck out back-to-back batters to end the threat.
The Lakers pushed across three runs in the third, all of the unearned variety
Southern Connecticut answered with four runs of its own in the top of the fourth. Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) doubled to lead off the inning. A.J. Rouleau (Westborough, Mass.) followed with a walk before Dorsey singled to drive in Geffert and move Rouleau to third. A RBI single by Kiernan made it 3-2 before Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.) capped the frame with a two-run single that gave the Owls a 4-3 lead.
The Lakers added another unearned run in the fourth to even the score at 4-4. Southern Connecticut loaded the bases in the top of the fifth but couldn’t score.
The Owls regained the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth, keyed by a go-ahead RBI single by Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) and a two-run single by Rouleau down the right field line to push their lead to 7-4.
However, GVSU scored twice in the bottom of the frame to close within a run once again.
The Southern Connecticut bullpen held the Lakers off the board in the final three innings. Zbin went 3.2 innings without allowing an earned run before turning the ball over to Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.). Yerina allowed two runs over 2.1 innings of work but notched the win to improve to 3-1 on the year.
A.J. Turnier (Waterford, Conn.) threw a scoreless seventh and recorded the first two outs in the eighth before issuing back-to-back walks. Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) escaped the jam in the eighth with a strikeout and worked around an error in the bottom of the ninth to tally his 15th save of the season.
Rosadino, Geffert, Dorsey, Cleary and Kiernan all had two hits apiece for the Owls in the winning effort.

Quinnipiac Men’s Ice Hockey Head Coach Rand Pecknold Named To NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Committee Will Serve For 2011-12 and 2012-13
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University Men’s Ice Hockey Head Coach Rand Pecknold has been selected as ECAC Hockey’s representative on the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey committee. Pecknold will serve on the committee for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. The committee, which has the primary responsibilities of selecting the teams, sites and seeding of the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament, is comprised of five individuals, with ECAC Hockey, Central Collegiate Hockey Association, Hockey East, Atlantic Hockey and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association represented.
"I am honored to represent ECAC Hockey on the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament Selection Committee,” Pecknold said. “With only five committee members it is a huge responsibility and I am excited to serve the sport that has given me so much."
Quinnipiac Director of Athletics and Recreation Jack McDonald previously served as chair of the NCAA Ice Hockey Committee, while on the NCAA Championships and Competition Cabinet from 1998 to 2002, where he championed bracket expansion from 12 to 16 teams.
"Rand's appointment to the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship Committee is another benchmark in his outstanding career as a Division I coach,” McDonald said. “His 17 years of experience will be welcomed by the NCAA Committee. I am sure that he will represent Quinnipiac, ECAC Hockey and all of men's ice hockey very, very well."
This past season, his 17th at Quinnipiac, Pecknold led the Bobcats to its 15th straight winning season at 16-15-8 while also leading Quinnipiac to the ECAC Hockey Championship Quarterfinals. Since joining ECAC Hockey for the 2005-06 season, the Bobcats have hosted an ECAC Hockey Championship First Round series in each of the last five years and are the only team in the 12-team league to win a postseason series in each season.
For his career, Pecknold boasts a career record of 317-216-56, making him just the fifth coach in Quinnipiac Athletics history to reach the 300-win mark. Since joining the Division I ranks for the 1998-99 season, Quinnipiac ranks in the top ten in NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey in wins and winning percentage. Among his many honors, Pecknold is a two-time Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year finalist, the 2005 Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year, the 2006 InsideCollegeHockey.com ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year and was a member of the inaugural class of the Elm City Legends in 2008.
In 2009-10, Quinnipiac reached new heights as the Bobcats were ranked 4th nationally in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Division I polls after winning 12 of their first 13 games. In 2010-11, Quinnipiac hosted elite national programs in Ohio State and nationally-ranked No. 8 Nebraska-Omaha, whom the Bobcats swept in a two-game series, at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Off the ice, Pecknold has pushed the Bobcats to improve academically while also facilitating the program’s community involvement. This past year, the men’s ice hockey program featured 23 players with grade-point averages over 3.00 for a team-wide 3.245 GPA. In the community, Pecknold has spearheaded several fundraising activities on behalf of Quinnipiac, including the "Blades & Skates" event in 2008 to benefit St. Baldrick's children's cancer research. The event, through efforts by Pecknold and Quinnipiac men's ice hockey's student-athletes, helped to raise over $30,000 for children's cancer research. In recent years, the Bobcats have also donated funds to benefit Autism Speaks and have volunteered with several local youth organizations in Connecticut.
