NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The running back tandem of senior John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) and junior Rashaad Slowley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) combined for 348 yards and five touchdowns as the Southern Connecticut State University football team earned a share of its third Northeast-10 Conference title in the last five years with a 52-21 win over Saint Anselm on Saturday at Jess Dow Field. Slowley finished with 187 yards and matched a career-high with three touchdowns, while Wiechman added 161 yards and two scores.

SCSU finishes its 2010 season with a 6-4 mark, 6-2 in the NE-10. St. Anselm closes at 2-8, 2-6.

The Owls opened the scoring with a special teams touchdown. After forcing Saint Anselm into a punt, freshman J.W. Forte (Everett, Mass.) captured the line drive kick and scampered 49 yards for a score. Eric LaVorgna (North Haven, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

Southern Connecticut put together an 11-play, 50-yard drive on its next possession. The drive was capped with a three-yard pass from quarterback Kevin Lynch (Medfield, Mass.) to tight end Nick Mandich (Miami, Fla.).

The Owls extended their lead to 21-0 when Slowley broke free for a 76-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the day.

Slowley registered his second touchdown of the day just 57 seconds into the second quarter on a 34-yard run to extend the lead to 28-0.

St. Anselm scored a touchdown before the half to trim the deficit to 28-7 at halftime.

Wiechman scored his first touchdown of the day midway through the third quarter, when he was on the end of a 23-yard pass from Lynch to make it 35-7. Slowley then broke free from 25 yards later in the quarter for his third score of the afternoon.

The Hawks closed to within 42-14 through three quarters, but LaVorgna’s 26-yard field goal just over four minutes into the final frame extended the Owls lead to 31 points.

After a St. Anselm score, Wiechman then capped the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown run to make it a 52-21.

Lynch finished 16-of-22 for 273 yards and two touchdowns. Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) led the receivers with seven catches for 140 yards. Brian Tourtelott (Latham, N.Y.) added four catches for 64 yards.

Instant Replay Radio – Owl’s Score Big in Second Half

Posted by SNCTTV On October - 24 - 2010Comments Off

EASTON, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut State University football team outscored Stonehill by a 32-0 margin in the second half and cruised to a 45-21 win over the Skyhawks on Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium. The Owls trailed 21-13 at halftime, but used a 25-point third quarter to seize control of the contest.

The Owls are now 4-4, 4-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Stonehill is 3-4, 1-4.

Trailing 21-13 at the break, the Owls took the opening kickoff of the second half and put together a six-play, 68-yard drive that concluded with a two-yard plunge from John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine). The PAT was no good, which kept the score at 21-19.

The Owls’ defense quickly forced a punt and the visitors wasted no time in taking the lead for good. Quarterback Kevin Lynch (Medfield, Mass.) connected with Nick Mandich (Miami, Fla.) on a 17-yard score to give SCSU its first lead of the day at 25-21.

Leading by four later in the frame, the visitors came through with another key defensive play when Gavin Nelson (Cambridge, Mass.) scooped up a fumble and returned it to the Stonehill 1. Wiechman found the end zone on the next play to extend the lead to 32-21 after a successful PAT from Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.).

The scoring barrage continued once more in the third quarter when Patrick Collins (Manchester, Conn.) finished off a five-play, 46-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

Lynch hit Jerome Cunningham (Waterbury, Conn.) for a 30-yard touchdown for the only fourth quarter scoring.

It was an interesting start to the contest, as the first three touchdowns of the game were not registered by either offense.

Stonehill’s Stephan Neville returned the game’s opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0 after the PAT. The Owls countered midway through the opening quarter when Josh McWilliams (Paterson, N.J.) corralled an airborne football and took it 24 yards the other way for a tying score.

The Skyhawks went back in front in the final minute of the opening quarter when Neville stripped an Owls’ wide receiver and went 35 yards for a touchdown.

SCSU cut it to 14-13 in the second quarter when Collins scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 1-yard run. However, Stonehill added a score on its next drive to extend its lead to 21-13 at halftime.

However, that would be the final scoring for the hosts on the day, and the Owls took over in the second half.

Lynch finished 15-of-27 for 216 yards and two touchdowns. Wiechman posted a season-high 133 yards on 24 carries and scored twice, while Collins also found the end zone on two occasions. Andre Privott (Middletown, Conn.) led the receivers with seven catches for 110 yards.

The SCSU defense merited just one offensive score – that coming after a successful fake punt gave Stonehill the ball at the Owls’ 8 – and held Eddie Vachon, the Northeast-10’s leading rusher to just 24 yards on 17 carries.

The Owls have a bye next week and return to action on Oct. 6 for a road game at Merrimack.

Posted by Don Boyle On October - 18 - 2010Comments Off

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team held a 26-19 lead going into the final quarter, but Bentley scored the final 17 points of the game to claim a 36-26 win over the Owls in the annual Homecoming game on Saturday.

Both teams moved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the result.

Trailing by seven points, Bentley had the ball to start the fourth quarter and comprised an 11-play, 65-yard drive to even the score at 26-26. The Owls punted on their next series and Bentley followed with a 14-play, 60-yard drive that culminated in a 21-yard field goal for a 29-26 Falcons lead.

Southern Connecticut got the ball back with just over three minutes to go, but an errant snap was recovered by Bentley at the Owls’ 17. The visitors then added a touchdown on the first play of the series to make it a 36-26 final.

The Owls opened the scoring just 3:06 into the game. After a Bentley punt, SCSU struck on its first play from scrimmage, a 52-yard pass from Kevin Lynch (Medfield, Mass.) to Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.). The PAT was no good, which kept the score at 6-0 through the first quarter.

Bentley took the lead with a touchdown early in the second quarter and a successful PAT try.

SCSU answered with a six-play, 57-yard drive that was capped by a two-yard run from John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine). Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.) added the PAT to make it 13-7.

Bentley went back in front with a touchdown on its next drive. The Falcons led 14-13 at halftime.

The Owls outscored Bentley by a 13-5 margin in the third quarter to take a 26-19 lead through three quarters.

Lynch found Jerome Cunningham (Waterbury, Conn.) on a two-yard touchdown pass exactly four minutes into the third quarter to put SCSU ahead, 19-14. The Owls elected to go for two after the score, but Lynch’s pass was intercepted by Don Hopkins at the goal line and returned the other way for two points.

A Bentley field goal later in the third quarter evened the score at 19-19. However, Southern Connecticut went back in front at 26-19 when Lynch hit Andre Privott (Middletown, Conn.) on a 3-yard score.

Wiechman led the ground attack with 75 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Lynch finished 11-of-22 for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Privott’s four catches and 79 receiving yards led the wideouts. Sam-uel Johnson (Newark, N.J.) totaled 12 tackles and a sack to lead the defense.

The Owls are back in action on Oct. 23 when they travel to Stonehill in a 1 p.m. start.
