NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Thanks to a dominating effort in all facets, the Southern Connecticut State University football team blanked Pace, 61-0, for its third consecutive victory. The final margin of victory was the largest in any shutout in school history.

New Haven, CT – The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Bowl Championship Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending September 17.

About the Award: This is the eighth year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Bowl Championship Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CHRIS RAINEY, FLORIDA
Senior, Running Back, Lakeland, FL/Lakeland
Florida senior running back Chris Rainey totaled 233 all-purpose yards and one touchdown as the 16th-ranked Gators defeated Tennessee, 33-23.  Rainey, who also blocked a punt in the contest, rushed for 108 yards (on 21 carries) and caught two passes for 104 yards, including a 83-yard touchdown as the Gators improved to 3-0, 1-0 in the SEC.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LSU junior cornerback Morris Claiborne had two interceptions and broke up one pass as the third-ranked Tigers (3-0, 1-0 in SEC) defeated #25 Mississippi State, 19-6, on Thursday evening.  Claiborne, who added one tackle, helped LSU’s defense hold the Bulldogs to just 193 yards of total offense.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. Yale Eleven Wins Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Patrick Witt (Wylie, Texas) threw three TD passes and ran for another as the Yale football team opened the 2011 season with a 37-27 win over Georgetown at Yale Bowl and the Class of 1954 Field.
Witt threw for 280 yards while completing 23 of 31 passes as the Bulldogs broke open a one-point (21-20) halftime lead with 16 straight points including a 10-yard pass to WR Chris Smith (Midlothian, Va.) and a four-yard run by Yale’s senior QB.
Smith, who had two TD catches and 272 all-purpose yards, was the other home team standout on offense with five catches for 104 yards, five kickoff returns for 163 yards and one rush for five more. Junior RB Mordecai Cargill chipped in 92 rushing yards and a pair of TDs (one receiving)
Yale senior LB Jordan Haynes led all Bulldogs with eight solos and 11 overall tackles, while senior LB Wes Moyer (6-1-7) had a team-high two tackles for lost yardage.
The Hoyas (2-1) had leads of 14-7 and 17-14 in the first half thanks to the passing of Isaiah Kempt (16-24, 115). He took a hit in the second half and was replaced by Scott Darby (16-26, 135), who caught an 18-yard scoring pass in the first quarter before throwing for one in the fourth.
The Elis open Ivy play next Saturday by hosting Cornell at noon.

BULLDOG BITES
Witt’s big opener moved him up in some of the Yale career charts. He is now sixth with 23 TD passes, third with 373 completions and fifth with 3,995 yards… Smith moved into fourth place with 992 KOR yards on the Eli career chart… Cargill tallied his first career rushing TD at Yale.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Senior running back Rashaad Slowley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) set a new a Southern Connecticut State University record with six touchdowns and finished with 205 yards on 35 carries as the Owls won their Northeast-10 Conference opener at Saint Anselm on Saturday, 59-34.

Owls Named Defense of the Week By Beyond College Sports Network

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team has been recognized as the ‘Defense of the Week’ by the Beyond College Sports Network. The Owls forced eight turnovers in Saturday’s 27-19 win at West Liberty. Southern Connecticut also recorded six interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown by Steven Teague (Hamden, Conn.).

The Owls return to action on Saturday for their Northeast-10 Conference opener at St. Anselm. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
