NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Broc Little, the most prolific scorer in Yale hockey’s most  successful class ever, has been named the winner of the 2011 William Neely Mallory Award, the most prestigious athletic award given to a senior male at Yale.

Little is a two-time All-ECAC Hockey and All-Ivy League selection who led the nation in three different offensive categories three straight seasons while accumulating 72 goals and 142 points, both fifth on the school’s career charts. He also owns the school’s season (5) and career (7) record for shorthanded goals.

This past season, Little helped the Elis to the best record in school history (28-7-1), ECAC and Ivy League Championships, a No. 1 overall national tournament seed and a second straight NCAA East Regional Final appearance. Little, a first-team All-Ivy selection, was second on the team with 19 goals and third with 43 points. He was also a Hobey Baker candidate (nation’s top male hockey player) and a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award (community, leadership, academic).

Little led the Blue with 27 goals in 2009-10, a Yale record for juniors. He also led Division I players with .79 goals per game, which helped him earn Reebok Second-Team All-America honors while making first-team All-ECAC, All-Ivy and All-New England.

During his sophomore season, Little skated in all 34 games while leading the nation with five shorthanded goals. He was tied for the team lead with 35 points while ranking third with 15 goals. He was third-team All-ECAC and a member of the ECAC All-Tournament Team while also garnering ECAC Hockey All-Academic honors.

Little led all freshmen (4th overall) in Division I with six game-winning goals in 2007-08, while finishing second on the team in points (23) and goals (11). He shared (with Denny Kearney) the Martin Dwyer Award, which goes to the team’s best freshman.

The speedy forward helped Yale to 89 victories, but he also helped the Blue win fans off the ice. Little was involved in team (skate with Bulldogs, youth days) and individual (talking at local schools) outreach activities as one of the most popular Eli hockey players in modern times.

The Rindge, N.H., native, who scored so many highlight goals during his four-year collegiate career, will skate professionally in Sweden next winter. Little, who led the 2010 Detroit Red Wings

Free-Agent Camp in scoring, was signed by Vasteras from the Swedish Allsvenskan League.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Kate Grace, a six-time Heptagonal champion in the 800-meter run, is the recipient of the 2011 Nellie Pratt Elliot Award, the most prestigious athletic award given to a senior female at Yale. The award was presented at the Class Day exercises on May 22.
The Nellie Pratt Elliot Award goes to the senior woman whose excellence in the field of athletics and in her life at Yale best represents the ideals of sportsmanship and Yale tradition. In March, Grace placed 13th in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earning her second-team All-America recognition.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Former Southern Connecticut State University All-American John Wallin has been named head men’s cross country/track and field coach at his alma mater. The announcement was made today by Director of Athletics Patricia D. Nicol. Wallin has distinguished himself as one of the top coaches in the nation over the past decade, a span that included stints at Dartmouth, Adams State College (Colo.) and SCSU. Wallin spent this past year as an assistant coach for the Owls and was named United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men’s Regional Assistant Coach of the Year during the outdoor campaign.

Wallin replaces Shawn Green, who stepped down at the conclusion of the 2009-10 academic year.

“John Wallin has established a pedigree as an outstanding coach who develops student-athletes that excel academically and athletically,” Nicol said. “In addition, he is well-versed in the storied tradition of our men’s cross country and track and field programs through his experiences as a student-athlete and coach here at SCSU. I am fully confident that John will continue that level of excellence as he assumes his head coaching duties.”

Wallin made an immediate impact in his first year with the Owls after a seven-year run as associate head men’s and women’s track and field coach at Adams State. During the 2009-10 academic year at SCSU, Wallin coached seven All-Americans, nine NCAA qualifiers, 24 All-New England selections, two New England champions and 19 Northeast-10 Conference champions. The Owls also won the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference men’s indoor and outdoor track and field championships and the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships for the first time in program history. SCSU was also ranked as high as No. 11 nationally during the indoor season.

During his tenure at Adams State, Wallin coached seven individual national champions, one relay national champion and 104 All-Americans (45 men, 59 women). His student-athletes claimed 25 school records, eight indoor Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meet records and 17 outdoor RMAC meet records.

Prior to joining the Adams State staff, Wallin served as assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach at Dartmouth College (1999-2001). During his time with the Big Green, he guided student-athletes to five school records, nine Ivy League titles, one Division I NCAA All-America honor and three New England decathlon champions.

Wallin also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Big Green and enjoyed a brief stint as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Dartmouth.

As a student-athlete, Wallin served as a two-year team captain for Southern Connecticut. He earned All-America honors in the decathlon as a junior and senior, while also qualifying for the NCAA Championships as a sophomore.

Wallin also took home conference champion honors in the 55 meter high hurdles as a senior, a campaign in which the Owls won their first indoor conference championship.

Wallin holds a bachelor’s degree in human performance from Southern Connecticut State University and has completed graduate work towards a master’s degree in human performance from Adams State.
