HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey head coach Rand Pecknold has announced that former Bobcats’ All-American Reid Cashman has been named assistant coach for the 2011-12 season. Cashman recently completed a five-year professional career that most recently saw him playing in Austria’s professional league.

"Reid was a special player, both on and off the ice, in his four years at Quinnipiac,” head coach Rand Pecknold. “His work ethic and competitiveness will translate into success as a coach.  He has had the good fortune of playing for some great pro coaches, including NHL Coach of the Year Dan Byslma.  Reid's hockey knowledge and his ability to communicate will make him a welcome addition to our progam."

Cashman was recently named as one of the top 50 players in ECAC Hockey history, as announced by the league during the 2010-11 season. Cashman was previously named to the ECAC Hockey All-Decade Team for the period from 2000 through 2009.

A native of Red Wing, Minn., he first earned All-America honors in 2004-05 when the Bobcats were members of Atlantic Hockey. Cashman went on to earn consecutive ECAC Hockey First Team and All-American honors when he finished as the league's top-scoring defenseman in 2006 and 2007, and was the only defenseman in the Top 20 in scoring in the nation in both years. In 2007, he captained a Quinnipiac team that played for the ECAC Hockey Championship in just its second year in the league.

In 79 career ECAC Hockey games, Cashman tallied 82 points, earning him a spot on the All-Decade team. In 2007, he finished second in the nation in scoring among defenseman with 41 points in 40 games for a 1.02 per game average. The previous season, he scored 41 points in 39 games for a 1.05 per game average, good for third in the nation among all blue-liners. In both seasons in ECAC Hockey, Cashman led the league in assists and power-play points and was a Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist.

The school record-holder in career assists with 125, he also holds the single-season defenseman records in assists with 35 in 2006-07 and 45 in 2004-05. The all-time leading scorer amongst defenseman, his 148 career points rank eighth overall.

Upon completion of his Quinnipiac career, Cashman signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, playing seven games that season with Toronto's top affiliate, the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL). Cashman enjoyed two stints with the Marlies, while also suiting up for the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Milwaukee Admirals. He also played for the Columbia Inferno, Wheeling Nailers and the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League before completing his professional career overseas with  EHC Black Wings Linz of the Austrian Erste Bank Ice Hockey League.

"Rand and his staff continue to elevate our men's ice hockey team to national prominence," McDonald said. "I am pleased that he will continue to guide the program to be successful on the ice and in the classroom while also making an impact in the community."

For his career, Pecknold boasts a career record of 317-216-56, making him just the fifth coach in Quinnipiac Athletics history to reach the 300-win mark. Since joining the Division I ranks for the 1998-99 season, Quinnipiac ranks in the top ten in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey in wins and winning percentage. In the community, Pecknold has  spearheaded several fundraising activities on behalf of  Quinnipiac, including the "Blades & Skates" event in 2008 to  benefit St. Baldrick's children's cancer research. The event,  through efforts by Pecknold and Quinnipiac men's ice hockey's  student-athletes, helped to raise over $30,000 for children's  cancer research. In recent years, the Bobcats have also donated  funds to benefit Autism Speaks and have volunteered with several  local youth organizations in Connecticut.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Broc Little, the most prolific scorer in Yale hockey’s most  successful class ever, has been named the winner of the 2011 William Neely Mallory Award, the most prestigious athletic award given to a senior male at Yale.

Little is a two-time All-ECAC Hockey and All-Ivy League selection who led the nation in three different offensive categories three straight seasons while accumulating 72 goals and 142 points, both fifth on the school’s career charts. He also owns the school’s season (5) and career (7) record for shorthanded goals.

This past season, Little helped the Elis to the best record in school history (28-7-1), ECAC and Ivy League Championships, a No. 1 overall national tournament seed and a second straight NCAA East Regional Final appearance. Little, a first-team All-Ivy selection, was second on the team with 19 goals and third with 43 points. He was also a Hobey Baker candidate (nation’s top male hockey player) and a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award (community, leadership, academic).

Little led the Blue with 27 goals in 2009-10, a Yale record for juniors. He also led Division I players with .79 goals per game, which helped him earn Reebok Second-Team All-America honors while making first-team All-ECAC, All-Ivy and All-New England.

During his sophomore season, Little skated in all 34 games while leading the nation with five shorthanded goals. He was tied for the team lead with 35 points while ranking third with 15 goals. He was third-team All-ECAC and a member of the ECAC All-Tournament Team while also garnering ECAC Hockey All-Academic honors.

Little led all freshmen (4th overall) in Division I with six game-winning goals in 2007-08, while finishing second on the team in points (23) and goals (11). He shared (with Denny Kearney) the Martin Dwyer Award, which goes to the team’s best freshman.

The speedy forward helped Yale to 89 victories, but he also helped the Blue win fans off the ice. Little was involved in team (skate with Bulldogs, youth days) and individual (talking at local schools) outreach activities as one of the most popular Eli hockey players in modern times.

The Rindge, N.H., native, who scored so many highlight goals during his four-year collegiate career, will skate professionally in Sweden next winter. Little, who led the 2010 Detroit Red Wings

Free-Agent Camp in scoring, was signed by Vasteras from the Swedish Allsvenskan League.

Grace is the Yale record holder in the 800 and one-mile indoors and the 800 and 1500 outdoors. In addition, she is part of school records in the 4x400 relays both indoors and outdoors.
Three weeks ago at the 2011 Outdoor Heps held at Yale, Grace was named the meet’s Outstanding Performer after winning the 800 by nearly one second and capturing the 1500-meter run with a school-record time of 4:20.77, which was only .02 seconds off the meet record.
In March, Grace placed 13th in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earning her second-team All-America recognition.
As a junior, Grace earned first-team All-America recognition after finishing eighth in the 800 run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Little Signs with Swedish League Team

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The waiting is over for Broc Little. While five of his Yale hockey teammates were skating for professional teams in early April hoping to earn contracts this fall, Little was waiting for something better. The senior from Rindge, N.H., may have gotten just that when he signed a one-year deal with Vasteras from the Swedish Allsvenskan League.

“Most people don’t go straight overseas after college but I was presented a good opportunity. I discussed the situation with numerous people, and they only had good things to say about it,” said Little, who reports to the team on August 1 and becomes a free agent after next season.

Little, who could be re-signed by Vasteras or ink a deal with a team from the states, will skate with former North Dakota player David Lundbohm, the only other American on the Swedish team.

Yale’s 2009-10 All-America pick and first-team All-ECAC selection finished his career with 72 goals and 142 points, both fifth on the school’s career charts. Little notched 19 goals and 43 points this winter.

Little, who will work out in Connecticut this summer before heading to Sweden, has earned two national statistical championships while at Yale. His sophomore year he led Division I with five shorthanded goals, while his .79 goals per game in 2009-10 were tops in the country.
