July 21, 2008 - KINGSTON, Jamaica – Two members of the Southern Connecticut State University swimming and diving program are off to strong starts at the 2008 Caribbean Island Championships. Senior Maria Zenoni of the women’s team and freshman Miguel Nesrala of the men’s squad are both representing their native Dominican Republic squad at the event, which features 20 countries from the region.
Zenoni has won two individual events to date through the first three days of action. She won the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:20.01 and the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:49.57. Zenoni captured the latter event by just eight-hundredths of a second.
She also finished fourth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:34.53.
Nesrala swam a leg of the 400 freestyle relay team that finished in second place with a time of 3:42.09.

Members of the Southern Connecticut State University football and men’s track and field programs took time on Saturday, July 19 to assist with an American Cancer Society Softball Tournament that was held at East Shore Park. The tournament was comprised of more than 30 teams and nearly 500 participants, along with numerous volunteers, who joined together to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The student-athletes assisted with facility setup and maintenance, as well as event management.
