Portland, ME vs. Cranston, RI – Portland, ME (28-3) overcame a four-run first inning deficit to beat Rhode Island (41-9), 6 to 4 earlier today. Maine used the long ball to pull away and send Rhode Island to the loser’s bracket. In the fifth inning Luke Hammond clouted a two-run homer to right to tie the score and in the sixth inning Matt Watson hit a solo home run down the line in right to garner a 5-4 lead.
Maine collected eight hits off three Rhode Island pitchers. Taylor Candage two-hits, 2RBI and Hammond two-hits, 2RBI sparked the attack. Rhode Island collected seven hits off four Maine pitchers. Dan Hopkins, Shane O’Connell, and Austin Milan all had RBI hits in the first inning.
The winning pitcher was Matt Powers, who was brilliant in relief. Over six-innings he allowed just two hits. The loser was Rhode Island starter Dan Hopkins.
Bristol, CT vs. Portsmouth, NH – Connecticut used a six-run fifth inning to break a 2- 2 tie and win 8-2 over New Hampshire. Marco Ross three hits, 2RBI and Nick Palmisano two hits and 2RBI led the attack. Meanwhile, Tyler McIntyre worked out of earlier control trouble to pick up the complete game victory.
McIntyre allowed just four hits, walked five, which included three in the first, and struck out three. New Hampshire starter Brad Monroe worked 4 1/3 innings and took the loss.
August 15, 2008 –
Addison County, VT vs. Lyndhurst, NJ - Vermont (24-8), (1-1) staved off elimination from the American Legion Northeast Regional earlier today by defeating New Jersey 8-5. The loss will send New Jersey (28-7) home with a (0-2) record in the tournament.
Vermont overcame a 1- 0 New Jersey lead when they scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Centerfielder Kyle Kayhart and pitcher Greg Lutton delivered RBI singles and catcher Chad Estey walked with the bases loaded to add another to springboard the Vermont to a 3-2 lead after three innings.
Vermont would increase the advantage to 8-2 through 8 ˝ innings. New Jersey rallied for 3-runs in the bottom of the ninth but their rally fell short when Vermont shortstop Cam Curler made a dazzling snare of bad hop ground ball for the game ending force out.
Offensively Estey paved the way for Vermont going 2 for 3 with 4 RBI. New Jersey’s leader was Carlos Gonzales 3 for 4 with a run scored.
Greg Lutton (6-2) went the distance allowing 5-runs on 10 hits to earn the win. Lutton displayed command of the strike zone striking out 6 and walking just 1 batter while hitting another. New Jersey’s Sean McGrath (7-3) took the loss.
Waterford, CT vs. Hanover, MA - Hanover (27-6) , (1-1) eliminated Waterford, CT (27-7) , (0-2) from the tournament by the score of 8-6. Hanover exploded out of the gate when they scored 5-runs on 5-hits in the bottom of the first inning. Pitcher Andrew Aizenstadt brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, leftfielder Jack Hocking delivered another with an RBI single, Eric Haughn singled in a run, first-baseman Kevin Lambert doubled home a run and right-fielder Ryan McDermott knocked home the final run of the inning.
Hanover banged out 11-hits. Hocking, Aizenstatd and Lambert sparked the attack with 2-RBI apiece. Waterford held to 6-hits was led by Kyle Turnier 1 for 4 and 2-RBI.
Hanover starter Andrew Aizenstadt (12-0) worked 8 2/3 innings over two appearances in the game to earn the win. He worked the first eight innings and gave way to reliever Ryan McDermott in the 9th. Waterford rallied to score three runs off McDermott forcing Aizenstadt back to the mound with a first and third situation and the score 8-5. Aizenstadt got a ground out and a strike out that stopped the Waterford comeback bid. Waterford starter A.J. Turnier (4-2) worked 6-innings to take the loss.
At first Aizenstadt was awarded a win and a save but the decision was changed after a check of the major league rule book the decision was changed to a win.

Hanover, MA vs. Cranston, RI - Game one of the the Northeast Regional American Legion Baseball Tournament was won by Cranston, RI. by the score of 5-2 over Hanover, MA. The game took 13-innings to decide a winner. Cranston scored the winning run on a bases loaded walk to Brent Hopkins in the top of the 13th., Shane O’Connell upped the lead to 5-2 with a 2-run single. Hanover had rallied from a 2-0, 9th inning deficit when centerfielder Chris Amante doubled home a pair to send it to extra innings.
O’Connell started the scoring with a solo home run in the second and added a second run in the 7th on a Chris Famigliette RBI triple.
The winning pitcher was John Healy who worked 4-full innings of relief work. The losing pitcher was Richard Gilbody who worked 5 2/3 innings of relief.
Portsmouth, NH vs. lyndhurst, NJ - Portsmouth, New Hampshire(20-5) on the strength of a four run third inning highlighted by a two-run home run by shortstop Mike Fransoso defeated Lyndhurst, New Jersey(28-6) 7-3.
Winning pitcher, Tim Welch (6-0) carried a shutout into the eighth inning until Lyndhurst scored a pair of runs on a bases-loaded walk to Lyndhurst catcher, Denis Ackerman, and a sac fly by secondbaseman, Pat Reitemeyer. Nate Jones came on to pitch the ninth for Portsmouth to seal the win.
Portsmouth outhit Lyndhurst 7-6 with thirdbaseman, Brad Monroe, garnering two hits and two rbi’s and outfielder, Keegan Pafford, also hit safely twice.
Portland, ME vs. Waterford, CT — Portland Maine’s Nova Seafood mercy-ruled Connecticut’s State Champion, Waterford 12-2. Waterford jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Terence Farina’s double with two on in the top of the fourth. Maine crept back with one in the fourth and then went ahead with three in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by a two run single by and a steal of home plate by Nova Seafood’s Matt Powers.
Nova blew the game open with another eight runs in the seventh on a two rbi single by Nova’s starting and winning pitcher, Taylor Candage, an rbi triple by Marc Ouimet and a bases clearing triple by Matt Powers. Losing pitcher Pat Quinn( 7-2) went five innings striking out five but walking four.
For Nova Seafood, Candage(6-1),struck out five and walked two in a complete game effort.
Bristol, CT vs. Addison County VT - powered by a 10-run 5th inning beat Addison County, VT 15-0 in round of the Northeast Regional tournament. Bristol started quickly in the first when Tyler McIntyre belted a long 2-run home run to right. Winning pitcher Mitch Rossi took over from there mowing down Vermont batters over 7-inning stopped by the mercy-rule after seven full innings. Rossi ended the game with 11 strike outs and just 2 hits allowed.
The Bristol offense banged out 15 hits. McIntyre lead the way with 3 RBI, Tim Georgen, Marco Ross and Nick Palmisano each collected 2 RBI
